Tharros Village is a seasonal, self-governed community located in Lewes, Delaware, that provides clean, safe, and structured shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness. Our model empowers residents to participate in shared responsibilities while accessing support services that promote long-term stability.

How is Tharros Village funded?
Tharros Village is funded through a combination of private donations, grants, and partnerships with nonprofit organizations and community stakeholders. We do not receive ongoing federal funding, making community support vital to our operations.

Who qualifies to live at Tharros Village?
Eligible residents are adults (18+) who are currently experiencing homelessness in Sussex County or the surrounding area. Residents must agree to participate in the self-governance model, follow community guidelines, and be able to live in a semi-independent outdoor setting.
Residents are expected to demonstrate personal accountability through daily work or volunteer requirements.

How do I apply to become a resident?
Interested individuals can apply through our intake partners, including local outreach programs, Code Purple shelters, or case managers at partnering agencies. Inquiries are also welcome (Link to form) subject to availability.

What services does Tharros Village provide?
We offer access to case management, mental health and wellness screenings, hygiene and sanitation facilities, and on-site support from partner organizations. Guests can also benefit from community meals and supplies, transportation to work or volunteer assignments, and referrals for housing, employment, and healthcare.

Is Tharros Village a permanent housing solution?
No. Tharros Village is a transitional shelter model designed to help individuals stabilize and prepare for permanent housing. It operates seasonally (March through November) and serves as a steppingstone to greater independence.

Is Tharros Village a tent city or encampment?
Not at all. Tharros Village is a well-organized, sanitary, and managed village. Residents live in individual tents with access to clean facilities, shared resources, and structured community guidelines. It is designed to be the opposite of unmanaged encampments.

Can residents stay at Tharros Village indefinitely?
Tharros Village is intended as a temporary shelter. Length of stay is based on individual needs, progress toward goals, and space availability. Each resident works with a case manager to develop a plan for permanent housing.
